AIX-EN-PROVENCE

IN THE MIDDLE OF LANDS

A MEDITERRANEAN TRAVEL LOG

What is the Mediterranean? A world of many worlds, intertwining histories and captivating cityscapes from Venice to Salonika, Cairo to Algiers, Catania to Marseille. Its different religions and cultures offer artists fertile ground to create a dialogue between daydreams, fantasies and ancient ruins that tell a different story.

Asking Elizabeth Lennard to train her New Yorker’s gaze on ancient columns and South Korean photographer Bae Bien U to put his stamp on the Venice lagoon opens up a universal interpretation of the "middle of lands”.

Stéphane Couturier dissects Fernand Pouillon’s architecture in Algiers underscoring changes in the cityscape. Adrien van Melle superimposes different cities to depict the migration of Mediterranean peoples. Marie Bovo’s En suisse le palais du Roi [In Switzerland the Palace of the King] bears witness to a lost Marseille. Lastly, like a 19th-century traveler, Elger Esser casts his literary and romantic gaze.
