This course will constantly prod participants to go beyond their photography habits as they take steps towards creating a personal series.
The work will resolutely focus on others — either one person or a group of individuals. Some participants will draw from the encounters to tell a story or describe a situation, while others will focus on stealthier exchanges, surveying the attitudes, cultural traits and features of a generation, a social group, a place, etc.
Whatever the nature of the project pursued with Françoise Huguier’s precious help and guidance, the approach will be based on thinking about photography’s spaces, limits and relationship to reality and on the photographer’s subliminal influences. “Others” often serve as a pretext for questioning what surrounds us. For one reason or another, that pretext will also have a personal resonance.
The course will give the participants’ curiosity free reign, sometimes intelligently, always kindly.
Alternating between photo shoots and editing sessions, the participants will discuss their intentions before starting to produce images. As the process moves forward, the series’ more or less brisk pace and the relationships between the photographs will bring it into focus.
