Trained in history and ethnology, François Cheval has been a museum curator since 1982. From 1996 to 2016 he was head of the Nicéphore Niépce Museum in Chalon-sur-Saône, where he dusted off old assumptions about photography and presented its originality through the design of exhibitions and a fresh discourse. Today he is an artistic director and exhibition curator aiming to challenge the certitudes of photography and its milieu by creating challenging moments of discovery and, perhaps, pleasure. Mr. Cheval has been artistic director of the BMW artist-in-residence program since its creation in 2011.
