TARANTISM: ODYSSEY OF AN ITALIAN RITUAL
Tarantism is a form of hysteria attributed to the bite of the Lycosa tarantula. The affliction was common in southern Italy, especially the province of Taranto, in the 16th and 17th centuries. Victims believed that they had to dance to cure themselves and escape death.
