Mireille Loup
53.77 (Anaglyph)
Mireille Loup is a photographer, video artist and writer. She studied at the Institute Saint-Luc in Brussels and the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles. Since the beginning of the 1990s, she has been orchestrating these different mediums and practicing photomontage and digital design. She develops her fictions in visual and sound mechanisms, scripts her interactive stories for the Internet or iPads. Loup’s art serves intertwined discursive and aesthetic forms, for several voices. 53.77 is an anaglyph work. Special glasses allow the spectator to read in virtual reality, where the images’ different planes detach themselves and follow the spectator’s eye movements. Here Mireille Loup reproduces six photographs assembled in a single anaglyph image. Without the glasses and the three-dimensionality, the remarkable contribution to her anaglyph research offers a singular blurred aesthetic. She refers back to the world of her works Mem (2009) and Les Autres (The Others) in 2011, in which mortuary images rub shoulders with spectral lights. In 53.77, the vision proposed allows access to a ghostly evolution. A young woman and a child sometimes cut across each other in the same space. Absence is emphasised by these bare places. Few clues are given: frozen movements and weightlessness suggest a connection with the supernatural, and the mysterious dates, 1953, 1977, a game of intersecting temporalities. The grey and blurred characters take form thanks to this interactive game with the spectator. In the last photographs, the protagonists slowly look back at the spectator. Observed as much as he spies, he takes shape in their eyes as though he gives them the opportunity of an existence each time he explores their virtual reality.
