Edition 2013

The task was not easy: focusing ‘unusual attention’ on four young ENSP graduates from the class of 2013. The idea is to show four very different viewpoints rooted in reality, sometimes straying from it to return to it better, where the personal and the political meet. These young artists share the same commitment to continuously questioning the immense possibilities of creation. Photography is a starting point for Jeannie Abert, who uses it as a basis for experimental research and has worked on assembling fragments of images for several years. The Revolutions series is a group of collages based on images culled from the press when the clashes that rocked the Arab world broke out in 2011. For Claire Cocano, images are an opportunity to question. In 2012 she made the Ceniza (ash) series in Spain on the landscape’s transformation by fire. The pictures are more than journalistic reportage; they offer an entropic reflection on the world. Loss of scale and distance from the subject matter widen the gap between reality and how it is portrayed. Edwin Fauthoux-Kresser combines photography, writing and video in order to explore perception of the landscape and its variations, especially through the poetic and fictional dimension of scientific discourse. An account drawing its voice and material from a hydrologist’s files gives The Instability of Phenomena its rhythm. Leslie Moquin’s photographs attest to a worldview focusing on forms, materials and colors. The Permadusk series—desolate landscapes, vestiges of human presence, animal figures—was inspired by science fiction. Light no longer penetrates the ashen veil that seems to shroud this world, where it is always dusk. The jury—Yannick Bouillis, exhibition curator and manager of Offprint Paris; Pascale Giffard, head of exhibitions for Les Rencontres d’Arles; and exhibition curator Laetitia Talbot—selected the four students just before graduation.

Exhibition venue: Atelier de la Mécanique, Parc des Ateliers.
