A JOURNEY THROUGH THE CENTRE NATIONAL DES ARTS PLASTIQUES’ PHOTO COLLECTION

IMAGES LIKE BIRDS

Invited to cast his gaze upon the Centre national des arts plastiques’ pho- tographic archive, photographer Patrick Tosani set out on a journey through the collection’s 12,000 photographs. The subjective and enlightened selection for the exhibition of 665 works by 183 artists constitutes a kind of atlas without a key, putting the images on the move. The images in themselves constitute ‘force fields’, to quote German historian Karl Sierek, author of Images Oiseaux (Images Birds). The great names of photography and their masterpieces are joined by a number of works that have rarely or never been exhibited before. Patrick Tosani worked together with Pierre Giner, who designed the scenography, the exhibition, and the special projection format for a group of selected images. The remarkable approach to presenting these latter photographs corresponds with the seemingly random manner of drawing works from the CNAP’s archive so as to rethink exhibition layout and further extend it. A selection of 1,000 photographic images will hence be presented in the form of an endless ‘video wall’. The exhibition will allow the public to share a photographer’s sensitive approach to the diversity of the CNAP collection. Le Cartel, in partnership with the students of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d’Arles, will also be present at the exhibition.
