In this exciting five-day course, Jane Evelyn Atwood leads participants in making a personal series—a stimulating experience in which they spell out their desires, explore a theme without getting lost in it and skillfully select their own photographs to tell a story. The course takes a learning-by-doing approach: participants can identify aspects they need to develop and deepen by enthusiastically, sincerely discussing the photographs taken each day. They will seek and explore but without becoming scattered.

Whatever the photographs’ nature—sensitive and rooted in reality or more conceptual and based on a place, person or fact—consistency, dialogue between the images and a search for meaning will be at the heart of the discussion and the focus of attention.

Ms. Atwood will give each participant largely individualized support and advice depending on his or her progress, sensibility, commitment and goals. If necessary, the subjects will be drawn from contacts and locations (social, environmental and sports organizations, institutions, farms, communities, companies, artisans, etc.) pre-selected by the Rencontres d’Arles and jointly chosen early in the week.

The focus will be on overcoming fears, taking the right position, listening, feeling and finding a narrative’s leitmotiv. After the final editing session, the photographs will be printed out and exhibited on the last day of the course.
