PRACTICAL INFORMATIONS

FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHERS
Every year, nearly 30 professional photographers share their experience, knowledge and vision. They are invited not just for the quality of their work, but also for their ability and desire to teach. For nearly 50 years, we have had the pleasure of welcoming the world’s greatest photographers as instructors, including Ansel Adams, Lee Friedlander, Paolo Roversi, Sarah Moon, Raymond Depardon, Lucien Clerque, Klavdij Sluban, Françoise Huguier, Antoine d’Agata and Jean-Christophe Béchet.

A UNIQUE PLACE
The Maison des Arènes is an 18th-century townhouse in the heart of Arles near the city’s most important heritage sites and just a few kilometers from the Mediterranean coast (Camargue, Provence, etc.). Participants have many tools at their disposal—a Mac computer, image-processing software, cameras, studios with artificial light sources and portable lighting accessories—to create an original, coherent series in a few days.

GENERAL INFORMATION
On the first day of the course, participants (eight at the most on weekends, 12 in spring and summer) meet at 9:30 a.m. (10:00 a.m. in summer). Alternating between shooting and editing sessions, the courses end at around 7 p.m., often casually continuing at night on the terrace. For courses lasting four or more days, prints are made from the participants’ files every day in order to edit them with the instructors more spontaneously and convivially.

Photographs, computers, lights and props are at the participants’ disposal. They are advised to bring their cameras and a selection of photos demonstrating their level and sensibility.

Our team scouts many locations for the courses. From offbeat heritage sites to farmers and Arles residents, nearly 200 pre-established contacts allow participants to quickly engage with their project.

For April, July and August courses, the participants present their work on the last day. This final step, which helps them decide on the series’ ultimate form, is very convivial and continues into the evening.
