Antonio Cataldo is a writer, curator, and cultural organizer. Since August 2018, Cataldo has been the Artistic Director of Fotogalleriet, Oslo, an independent and publicly-funded institution, the oldest Kunsthalle solely dedicated to photography as a critical art practice in the Nordic region.
At Fotogalleriet, Cataldo has actively challenged institutional models, their governing structures, and the representative social role of images and organized exhibitions with artists Andreas Angelidakis, Bouchra Khalili, Dora García, Daisuke Kosugi, Fin Serck-Hanssen, Brittany Nelson, and Julie Poly.
Since 2022 Fotogalleriet has been part of FUTURES, a network of photography institutions. He is the author of Curating Labour, a book in the OnCurating catalog, Zurich. His edited book Conversations on Photography (2021) retraces the birth and development of art photography in the Nordic region through dialogues with notable local and international practitioners.
Cataldo obtained an MA in 2006 under the thesis supervision of philosopher Giorgio Agamben in Venice, Italy, and a Ph.D. from ZHdK in Switzerland and the University of Reading in the UK. He sits on the boards of The Kunsthalles of Norway and the Sandefjord Kunstforening Art Award jury. A Steering Committee Member of the European Assembly of Contemporary Art Centres, over the last two decades, Cataldo held curatorial and other positions at OCA – Office for Contemporary Art Norway; La Biennale di Venezia, where he also co-curated the Nordic Pavilion in 2015; and Iuav, University of Venice.
