John Davies
Born in County Durham, England, in 1949. Lives and works in Liverpool.
John Davies grew up in both coal mining and farming communities. After graduating he visited Ireland where he started to photograph the interaction between sky and land. In the 1980s, he started to document the legacy of the Industrial Revolution in shaping cities and urban landscapes. Since 1984 he has worked on numerous landscape projects throughout Europe. His first commission in France documented 10 communes in the Territoire de Belfort in 1987. Since then he has continued to regularly photograph various landscapes in France. In 2008 he was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize for his exhibition and book The British Landscape, 2006.
