JEAN-MICHEL OTHONIEL

Born in 1964 in Saint-Etienne.
Jean-Michel Othoniel is a contemporary French artist who was awarded a residency at the Villa Médicis. He loves metamorphoses: blown-glass forms that become erotic objects, jewellery, architecture or sculptures. Some of his masts and pearl necklaces recreate dream worlds and call Gaudi to mind. His works include the entrance to the Palais Royal metro station in Paris, Le Kiosque des Noctambules, and an installation to adorn the tramway in Nice (2007).Othoniel uses blown glass as a multi-coloured palette that nourishes his opulent and baroque œuvre. Like his Renaissance and 18th-century predecessors, he assigns the execution of his pieces to highly qualified artisans, especially glassmakers.
