Liu ZHENG

Born in Hebei province, China, in 1969.

Lives and works in Beijing.

Liu Zheng trained at Beijing Polytechnic University (1987-1991) and until 1997 worked as a photojournalist (for the Worker’s Daily, one of China's biggest-selling newspapers). During this period, Liu took a special interest in accidents and disasters, in the dead and dying, and in any personal drama made public. From this experience Liu has kept a fascination with the human body, while addressing the subject in a more personal manner and rejecting the traditional clichés.

His principal works are Three Realms and Les Chinois (The Chinese). In 1999 he took part in the exhibitions Love: Chinese Contemporary Photography & Video, at the Tachikawa Art Festival in Tokyo; and Transience: Chinese Experimental Art at the End of the Twentieth Century at the Smart Museum of Art, Chicago.

A selection of his last exhibitions: A Prayer is a Prayer is a Prayer, Andrea Meislin Gallery, New York, NY (2012) ; Water: Caochangdi Photospring, Pekin Fine Arts, Bejing, China , 2010 (expositions de groupe) ; Liu Zheng: Survians, SOHO New Town, Beijing, China , Under the Sun, Art Beijing (2006) ...

Liu Zheng presented his work at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2003: Liu Zheng au Magasin Electrique.
