Chen LINGYANG

Born in 1975 in Zhejiang.

Lives and works in Beijing.

Cheng Lingyang trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, graduating in 1995, and went on to study at the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1999, she embarked on Twelve Flower Months, a disconcerting piece of work that transgresses the conventional image of woman while poetically unveiling her identity. For this work, Cheng photographed in an aesthetic but realistic way the twelve months of a woman's cycle, in time with the seasons, in a staging that was both traditional and provocative. In doing so, she demystified the menstrual cycle and at the same time conferred on it a certain sacred quality.

Her first individual exhibition, Paradise or Paradise Lost, was presented in 1998 in Beijing. She recently took part in the group exhibition Take Part at the Urs Meile Gallery in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Chen Lingyang presented her work at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2003, with her series Twelve Flower Months at the Chapelle Saint Blaise.
