Lives and works in London.


Gillian Wearing studied art at Goldsmith’s College in London from 1987 to 1990, after taking the diploma of art and design at the Chelsea School of Art in 1985-87.

Her first group exhibition took place at the Diorama Art Centre in London in 1991. Other group exhibitions followed around the world, in such prestigious venues as the Capc Musée d’Art Contemporain in Bordeaux (Traffic, 1996), the Kunstverein in Hamburg (Fast Forward Body Check, 1998), Tate Modern in London (Tate Modern Collection, 2000) and MoMA in New York for its reopening in 2004 (Inaugural Show : MoMA reopening).

Her first individual exhibition was City Racing, in London in 1993. Since 1994 she has been with the Maureen Paley Gallery in London. Exhibitions followed in quick succession in London, Paris, Dijon, New York, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome and elsewhere. In 2003 her Mass Observation exhibition featured at the ICA in Philadelphia, the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Montreal and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, accompanied by a catalogue. The same year saw her Album series on show in New York and at the Maureen Paley gallery.

From the outset Gillian Wearing's work has been widely featured in major newspapers and specialist publications. The Musée d’art Moderne de la Ville de Paris devoted the monograph Gillian Wearing "Sous influence"  to her in 2001, with other monographs published by the Caixa Foundation in Barcelona and the Serpentine Gallery and Phaidon Press in London, in 2000-2001.


Gillian Wearing presented his work at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2005, nominated by Ute Eskildsen for the "Dialogue de l’Humanité" Award : Album at the Magasin Electrique.
