Geert VAN KESTEREN
Born in 1966 in the Netherlands, where he lives and works.
Van Kesteren is a self taught photographer. He is based in Amsterdam and is a frequent traveler to Africa and the Middle East.
His book Mwendengula! AIDS in Zambia, an inside report on the AIDS pandemic in Africa, published in 2000 won several international awards and was published by leading magazines.
His first trip to Iraq was in 1998 during operation Desert Fox. In 2003 en 2004 he spent seven months in Iraq, assigned by Newsweek and Stern. Why Mister, Why? was published in 2004 by Artimo (Amsterdam). The book shows the absurdity of the war and the underlying clash of cultures, bearing witness to what went wrong in Iraq during the American occupation.
Van Kesteren won several prizes for this body of work : The Zilveren Camera 2004 (Netherlands) and a 2nd prize and 3rd prize for Foreign News Series and Spot News stories respectively, at World Press Photo 2004.
Van Kesteren is currently working on SPEAKING4EARTH, a project designed to establish an international campaign to support indigenous peoples’ struggles for their land and life. NRC Handelsblad (Netherlands) and Stern (Germany) commissioned him to document the tsunami struck regions in Asia in 2005.
