Gay BLOCK
Born in 1942 in Houston, Texas.
As a portrait photographer, Gay Block began in 1973 with portraits of her own Jewish community in Houston, later including others such as the people of South Miami Beach. Her landmark work with writer Malka Drucker, RESCUERS: Portraits of Moral Courage in the Holocaust, both book and travelling exhibit, has been seen in over fifty venues internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1992. In 2003, Block’s 30-year portrait of her mother in photographs, video, and words, Bertha Alyce: Mother exPosed, was published by UNM Press. Currently Block is photographing lesbians as well as re-photographing the women whom she photographed as camp girls in 1981. Her photographs are in many collections such as MoMA New York, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Jewish Museum NY, and San Francisco MoMA. Gay Block presented her work at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2007, nominated by Anne Wikles Tucker for the Discovery Award: Portraits Projects à l'Atelier de Maintenance.
