Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival 2021 in Review
On January 3rd, 2022, the 7th Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival came to a successful conclusion!
Although travel restrictions were imposed at home and abroad due to the pandemic, we still attracted nearly 50,000 visitors to the exhibition.
30 exhibitions facilitated by 28 curators presented more than 2,000 works by over 110 artists from France, Singapore, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Malaysia, mainland China, etc.
Two major awards were announced during the opening week: Wang Yimo, an artist from Chongqing, won the Jimei x Arles Discovery Award 2021 with her exhibition “Theater on Earth”, which will be showcased at Les Rencontres d'Arles in 2022. This year, Jimei x Arles established the first Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image, which Three Shadows Photography Art Centre and CHANEL jointly launched and co-organised by Les Rencontres d'Arles and Modern Media. The award encourages young curators to study photography and moving images and to facilitate the production and promotion of outstanding, contemporary artworks in the field. The Curatorial Award for Photography and Moving Image was won by Jiang Feiran. Her exhibition “Unnamed River” will make its debut at Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing) and ZiWU (Shanghai) in 2022. Jiang Feiran will also start the educational programs supported by the project, including academic research and exchange.
During the festival, more than 70 events were organised: exhibitions guided tours, book signings, poetry reading, immersive theatre, musical performances, film screenings, Artist-in-Residence Open Studio, afterparties, and other diversified and multicultural events.
