MAKING A PHOTOGRAPHIC BOOK: from selection to dummy

Decisions will be based on a computer layout made with the help of a graphic artist that will underscore the narrative’s editorial lines and structure, including the choice of format, cover, interior layout, font, paper and binding. Time will also be devoted to exploring the possibilities of self-publication or contacting a publisher, including the drafting of a budget and a business model. Ms. Pavia will share her 20 years of experience as director of Le Bec en l'air.
What to bring:
A photographic series (100 pictures maximum) and, if possible, a short written presentation on paper (simple) and corresponding digital files in jpeg format.
FABIENNE PAVIA
Fabienne Pavia was a magazine journalist before turning to publishing. She was a writer and a freelance publisher for several companies before founding in 1999 Le Bec en l’air, a publishing house focusing on photography. For several years, she has taught courses and workshops on photographic publishing and co-directed a book festival in Marseille that emphasizes the image. Based in Marseille, Le Bec en l’air boasts nearly 300 titles in its catalogue. They combine images and text with a contemporary page layout and author’s photographs. Over the years, Le Bec en l’air has published a wide variety of books, but they are all share the same editorial line: photography, whether documentary, aesthetic or intimate, as a tool to question the world. They feature recognized and emerging photographers; no style or artistic sensibility is left out. Le Bec en l'air has won several awards, including the 2015 Prix Nadar for Bruno Boudjelal’s Algérie, clos comme on ferme un livre? A partner of several festivals, whose catalogues it publishes (ImageSingulières, etc.), it works on a regular basis with museums, galleries and agencies and has co-published the + Photographie. Les acquisitions des collections publiques collection with the Ministry of Culture since 2020.

COMPLEMENTARY INFORMATION
- Language : depends on the audience (possibility of traduction during the workshop)

TEACHING METHOD
- Taught by an instructor and an assistant
LANGUAGE
Workshop held in both French and English :
- Collective parts in French with a translation for non-French speakers.
- One-to-one interviews could be in English.
