This exciting experience with Denis Dailleux will focus on portraiture.

A portrait is considered an interaction, often brief, between a photographer and a model. To be successful, a trusting bond must be simply and swiftly established.

Through advice, experiments out in the field and discussions, participants will find a way of being with and in front of the other. Some will need to overcome their shyness, others to curb their enthusiasm. They will receive meticulous, sensitive and often-indispensable advice to capture the hoped-for gaze, attitude and intensity. This is necessary to gently (preferably) get the person photographed to open up, strike a pose or forget that he or she is in front of a camera. The approach will stress the basics: observation, contact, light and framing.

During group and individual shooting sessions, field trips and precise editing, participants will work on a personal project based on their goals and on places and contacts chosen by the Rencontres d’Arles.

DENIS DAILLEUX
"Imbued with his distinctive delicacy, Denis Dailleux’s photographic work looks calm on the surface, yet is incredibly demanding, crossed by an undercurrent of constant self-doubt and propelled by the essential personal bond he develops with those (and that which) he frames with his camera. His passion for people has naturally led him to choose portraiture as his preferred means of representing those whose true self he feels an urge to get closer to. Which he has, whether with actress Catherine Deceive or with countless anonymous subjects in the slums of Cairo, working with the same discretion, waiting to get from them what he is hoping they will offer him, without ever asking for it but simply waiting for it to happen. That is how he has patiently constructed a unique portrait of his beloved Cairo to create, with black and whites of exemplary classicism and colors of rare subtlety, an alternative to the cultural and touristic clichés cluttering our minds.”

A member of the Vu' agency, portrait photographer Denis Dailleux takes as much interest in famous people as he does in the residents of his native village. He has been the recipient of many honors, including the first Ilford Award in 1995, the City of Vevey Hasselblad Award and the World Press Photo Award in the portrait stories category in 2000, the Fujifilm Award at the Terres d’Images festival in 2001 and second prize in the staged portraits category at the World Press Photo Awards for his Mother and Son series in 2014.
