RENCONTRES PROFESSIONNELLES DE L'ÉDUCATION AUX IMAGES 2023
LIVING SPACES AND IDENTITIES
21 - 23 september
In French only
The Rencontres d'Arles invites cultural, educational, medical and social professionals interested in image education to meet each other for three days of lectures, workshops and exhibition tours.
The eighth edition will address two themes:
Living spaces: between the real and the imaginary, and Identities: from the intimate to the collective.
The program is based on input from photographers, sociologists and players in the field who intersects with these issues every day.
The discussions will focus on living spaces, places where people grow up but also those imposed by the accidents of life or the need for support. They can be areas as large as a city or as small as a cell, places where the image becomes a space of expression, reflection, construction and escape during the time of a workshop or a project.
These issues are linked to identities: those we inherit, those we endure, but also those we no longer wish to conceal and those we wish to see in the eyes of others. Researchers, artists and passers-by use images to question how they sometimes help us to assert ourselves. Exciting discussions will fuel an exchange of ideas and, we hope, lead to the development of actions in the future.
With support from the Ministry of Culture and Communication and the active collaboration of the ENSP d’Arles.
PROGRAMMATION
– Thursday September 21
9:30 am: Welcome
10 am-12:30 pm LECTURE “LIVING SPACES: BETWEEN THE REAL AND THE IMAGINARY”
WITH Yohanne Lamoulère et Klavdij Sluban
This outstanding lecture will bring together photographers Yohanne Lamoulère and Klavdij Sluban. Through their eyes and their multiple experiences, they will invite us into very different living spaces, including the neighborhoods and shantytowns on the outskirts of Marseille that Yohanne has been exploring for many years. Her approach is based on interaction with the inhabitants and organizations in these areas.
Klavdij will tell us about his many immersive experiences in prisons in France, Eastern Europe and Latin America. His intense, insightful photographic work is based on workshops with young inmates.
While Klavdij and Yohanne move in very different, even opposing, photography worlds, they have two points in common: unfailing commitment and artistic rigor.
The lecture will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.
2:30-5 pm MEETINGS AND TOURS
MEET FRANÇOISE BEAUGUION
A member of the VOST collective, for several years Françoise Beauguion has coordinated and edited Un autre Monde, a newspaper written, published and sold by people in severe economic straits.
MEET CHARLOTTE ARTHAUD
Photographer Charlotte Arthaud is strongly committed to transmission. Drawing inspiration from medical protocols, she has developed the idea of "care" in photography. The approach has been tested with women students preparing for careers in healthcare as part of the ImageIn program run by the ENSP in Arles, as well as with elderly people.
MEET KLAVDIJ SLUBAN
Since 1995, internationally acclaimed photographer Klavdij Sluban has shared his passion for his craft with many different kinds of people in Europe and around the world. He began this adventure with teenage inmates at the prison in Fleury-Mérogis, where he teamed up for a time with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Riboud and William Klein.
MEET YOHANNE LAMOULÈRE
A member of the Tendance Floue collective, Yohanne Lamoulère has carried out long-term photography projects in places that are often on the outskirts of cities, working closely with the people living there. She also leads workshops in community centers, schools and prisons. Yohanne will give guided tours of her exhibition Les enfants du fleuve (“The Children of the River”), presented at this year’s festival.
EXHIBITION TOURS BASED ON THE THEME “LIVING SPACES”
The festival’s mediation team presents a selection of shows based on the theme of living spaces and shares feedback from different members of the public (festival-goers, visitors from recreational centers, schoolchildren, etc.).
6:30-8:30 pm SHARING TIME & POP-UP EXHIBITION
Participants and speakers will meet to discover and discuss the photographs made in Marguerite Bornhauser and Grégoire Korganow’s workshops. Projects carried out since the beginning of the week in Arles explore the following themes:
Photography: a poetry of daily life
The body: between the private and the political
Drinks and music will accompany the discussion.
– Friday September 22
10 am-12:30 pm LECTURE “IDENTITIES: FROM THE INTIMATE TO THE COLLECTIVE”
WITH JOCELYN LACHANCE AND OLIVIER CULMANN
An unusual team will give this lecture: social anthropologist Jocelyn Lachance, who for many years has done research on teenagers’ relationship with digital information tools, and photographer Olivier Culmann, who takes sly pleasure in shaking up the way photography can depict us.
The duo explores the interactions between images, their creation and dissemination and the construction and “validation” of one or more identities.
They will also discuss experimentation, both photographic, with Olivier’s original images, and social, by considering how young people build their personalities largely through trial-and-error and validation of their experiences.
The lecture will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.
2:30-5:00 pm MEETINGS AND TOURS
MEET GRÉGOIRE KORGANOW
Renowned photographer and videographer Grégoire Korganow has carried out many personal projects where the body, its stigmata and its different states occupy a key place. Several of them have taken place in French prisons, where he is not only a guard but has sometimes teamed up with choreographers and dancers to make films. Grégoire has also led workshops such as the Souffle (“Breath”) project in six high schools, and Une conte de Noël (“A Christmas Tale”) with hospitalized teenagers in Rouen in collaboration with choreographer Sylvain Groud.
MEET GENEVIÈVE VERGOS-ROZAN AND DAVID PINZÓN
Geneviève Vergos-Rozan, a mediator at the Ancient Arles Departmental Museum, and photographer David Pinzón carried out a four-year project with the G. Broutet Hospital in Avignon combining the exploration of heritage with artistic practice. The project allowed patients to learn about their cultural environment and forge bonds of trust. An exhibition, "Regards Mêlés" (“Mixed Gazes”), highlighted the involvement of the project’s participants.
MEET THE ARCHIPEL DES LUCIOLES (EX-PASSEURS D’IMAGES)
The Archipel des lucioles has developed or coordinated several programs, tools and projects dealing with gender identity and romantic and sexual orientation issues (Kit LGBT, Genre en images, Masculinité(s)/Fémininité(s), etc.), which run deep through the field of film education. The event will draw on specific examples and present various resources and methodologies to develop approaches tailored to the target public, goals, context (in or out of school), etc.
MEET OLIVIER CULMANN
Photographer Olivier Culmann, a member of the Tendance Flou collective, explores the idea of identity through an approach to the image open to many practices. Some of the work he did in India, France and Korea wittily plays with social codes and modes of representation. For nearly 20 years, he has led workshops helping students and young photographers define their work, placing the author’s unavoidably subjective gaze at the heart of the creative process.
EXHIBITION TOURS BASED ON THE THEME “IDENTITIES”
The festival’s mediation team presents a selection of shows based on the theme of identities and shares feedback from different members of the public (festival-goers, visitors from recreational centers, schoolchildren, etc.).
– Saturday September 23
