RENCONTRES PROFESSIONNELLES DE L'ÉDUCATION AUX IMAGES 2022

PHOTOGRAPHIC TERRITORIES: FROM THE PRIVATE TO THE COLLECTIVE

These days will focus on some of the “territories”—both geographical and private—that photography allows us to discover. For example, young people continuously explore their own identities by sharing their self-representation. The program will deal with individuals, bodies and how people and artists experiment with ways of telling their or others’ stories.

Lectures, discussions and tours will introduce works by artists and field projects to prompt reflection and, we hope, future actions.

The territory is also that of the collective and of living together. Several stories will allow us to examine the links created between spaces and communities. How can these interactions be made visible? How can photography allow us to interrogate and take a fresh look at our immediate surroundings? While many questions remain unanswered, they enable us to envisage photography as a passport to countless destinations.

_ Thursday, September 22
9:30 am: Welcome

10:00 am-13:00 pm: Lecture: “Body Languages” with Aurore Valade and Antoine d’Agata
Photographer and artist Aurore Valade will present “Bodies and Photographic Performance”, which brings bodies, from the youngest to oldest, into play in participatory performances to tell the story of complex identities. Her many awards include the 2005 Bourse du Talent, 2008 HSBC Prize for Photography and 2017 Rencontres d’Arles Photo Folio Review.

Internationally renowned photographer Antoine d’Agata’s prolific, multi-faceted career embraces and shifts the limits of media, tirelessly questioning the photographer’s commitment and our idea of the world. He will share a selection of his works in which the body and its many representations play a key role.

2:30-5:00 pm: DISCUSSIONS AND EXHIBITION TOURS:
(choice of one activity)
- Discussion with Yohanne Lamoulère on the theme of bodies and identity in photography. She will present a selection of her works and talk with the participants about projects and workshops carried out with social and cultural organizations and prisons in the past two years.

- Discussion with Pascal Bois about his experience in leading photography workshops with disabled people. He will be joined by several participants in the cultural inclusion project “All Equal Behind the Lens”.

- Discussion with Aurore Valade about the body in photography, a focus of research, experimentation and protest. It will be based on a selection of works presented this year by the festival and on workshops in schools.

- Discussion with Antoine d’Agata about several young people’s educational workshops he has led in France and abroad in recent years, different visions of the body and their impact on photographic creativity.

- Tour with the Rencontres d'Arles mediation team of a selection of festival exhibitions on the theme of performance and the body. Backed by the experience of the 18th “Rentrée en images” (an outreach program involving nearly 250 classes from primary to high school in September), the Rencontres teaching team will welcome participants’ feedback and exchange ideas with them.

7:00-8:30 pm: Meet and greet

– Friday, September 23

10:00 am-12:30 pm: LECTURE “Territories in Motion” with Sergio Valenzuela Escobedo
Artist and curator Sergio Valenzuela Escobedo has designed and organized many art exhibitions in Chile and Europe, notably “Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation” and “Geometrical Forests, Struggles in Mapuche Territory”, which is currently running at the Rencontres d’Arles and attests to the clash between two world views in southern Chile: one based on the free-market economy, the other making the relationship to the environment a spiritual issue.

Mr. Valenzuela Escobedo will present several recent projects involving the idea of territory and its representations. He will also discuss his research on the critical and historical understanding of the camera’s arrival in South America and its complex interactions with original peoples.

2:00-4:30 pm: DISCUSSIONS AND EXHIBITION TOURS:
