FREQUENT QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LOUIS ROEDERER DISCOVERY AWARD

WHY DOES A PROJECT NEED TO BE PRESENTED BY AN ORGANIZATION, AND NOT THE ARTIST ALONE?

Organizations like community spaces, independent venues, artist-run spaces, galleries, institutions and foundations are often the first to spot and support emerging artists. Through the Louis Roederer Discovery Award, the Rencontres d’Arles associates with these key players that promote photography. The award hopes to introduce the artists these organizations have identified and/or accompanied to a wider public.

WHAT SHOULD BE THE NATURE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ARTIST AND THE ORGANIZATION?

Organizations and artists can collaborate in many ways.  The relationship could be long-term in which the artist and the organization have worked together for some time or one where the organization represents the artist. The collaboration could also be on a short-term basis in which the artist and the organization have worked together on a project and want to team up again to present a project for the award. In some cases, an artist and organisation could collaborate specifically for this open call.

WHICH SORT OF ORGANIZATIONS CAN PRESENT A PROJECT?

The definition of an ‘organisation’ for the purpose of the award application is broad and it can range from community spaces to independent venues, artist-run spaces, exhibition spaces, institutions, galleries, foundations, residencies, etc. The organization must be focussed towards exhibiting artist works (a publisher, for example, does not fall within the scope of this call for application but a bookshop that organizes exhibitions does).

ONCE SELECTED, WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THE ARTIST, THE ORGANIZATION AND THE RENCONTRES D’ARLES TO PRODUCE THE SHOW?

The selected artists/organizations will work with the curator and the Rencontres d'Arles to produce the Louis Roederer Discovery Award exhibition in Arles.
The organization covers the costs of the production of the works and the shipping of the works to Paris (round trip) (in cases where works are printed for the show, one way shipping may be done, and prints can be destroyed at the end of the exhibition). The Rencontres d'Arles cover the cost of shipping them to Arles from Paris, and then return to Paris, insurance, design conception , mounting and dismantling of the works. The Rencontres d'Arles also invites the artist to Arles for three days to present his or her work during opening week.
All the production terms are detailed in the article 4 of the Discovery Award rules & regulations

How does the Discovery Award define "emerging" or "recently discovered" artist?

In the framework of the Louis Roederer Discovery Award, we want to showcase artists who are early career individuals or those whose work has not yet been widely shown. One of the award’s goals is to disseminate the work more widely and present it to an international audience. The proposed work must not have been previously shown in a major exhibition and preference will be given to those that are produced recently. With the Louis Roederer Discovery Award, the festival aims to be a springboard for unprecedented projects.
