This year’s jury believes that these three graduates of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d’Arles (ENSP) merit An Unusual Attention at the Rencontres d’Arles 2020. Their work, each in its own way, is about sharing a time, a space and an activity. For Robin Plus, Sára Szabó and Zheng Heng, showing the contradictions of living life within a community of choice or origin also entails analyzing its poetic and political values. Robin Plus is personally involved in the LGBTQI+ community, especially its nightlife and queer movements. They form the basis of his artistic experiments, which he associates with musical subcultures, videos and pop culture. Using parody, Sára Szabó explores the relationships between heroism and obedience as a founding myth of a certain idea of citizenship. She finds a relevant field of analysis in the utopian community represented by Europe, today inclined to nationalism, exclusion and fear of the other. For Zheng Heng, the presence of poetry in his hometown’s everyday life is more magical than fictional. By stretching and expanding time, his filmed portraits restore the emotional memory of a community of belonging.
Exhibition coproduced by ENSP and the Rencontres d’Arles.
