Katrien De Blauwer

Commencer

29 June - 30 August

10H00 - 19H30

The title of Katrien de Blauwer’s project, Commencer, is based on that of Samuel Beckett’s novel Comment c’est [How It Is], itself a pun on the French verb commencer or 'to begin', quoted on screen in Sloth, one of the sketches in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1962 film The Seven Deadly Sins. Evoking both authors, she delicately weaves together two of her major interests, film and literature. In this show, she chooses images from the New Wave (film, objects, sets, texts and paintings) and forges a new narrative that tells its story. The aesthetics, prevalent femininity, characters, objects and artistry in Godard’s films, especially those from the early 1960s, are a leitmotiv in every work in Commencer. All of these identifiable, inextricably intertwined elements constitute the open-ended storyboard of a film that has not been made yet.

Forthcoming publication at éditions Textuel.
