Leigh Ledare

Leigh Ledare will present a series of conceptually driven photographic works under the title ‘Double Bind’.
The framework for this project consisted of Ledare going on a 3-day trip to a country house alone with his ex-wife, during which time he created an archive of photographs of his ex-wife. Two months following this initial trip, upon Ledare’s prompt, his ex-wife went alone with her current husband to the same location. This time her current husband documented her for 3 days. Taken as an origin for this project, the resulting two subjective archives of photographs suggest an ontological and phenom- enological comparison of the subject as seen within the conditions of these two separate relationships, one a newlywed relationship associated with potential, the other a relationship forfeited to non-potential. These two separate archives form the underlying diptych structure of the work, one panel being black and one white, respectively containing images made by the ex-husband and images made by the current husband. Augmenting these two initial sets of images, a third archive is introduced in the form of collage/montage. Drawn from magazines and other printed materials, these augmenting images take up an analytical mode of creating meaning from a common field of representation. The media used echoes the potential/non-potential scenario of the subjective relationship giving structure to the work.
These works will result finally in a large-scale magazine, forming an intervention back into the print media from which they find their origin.
