Edition 2013

THE AUTHOR BOOK AWARD AND THE HISTORICAL BOOK AWARD

The Author Book Award is given to the best photographic project published between 1 June 2012 and 31 May 2013. The winning author receives 8,000 euros and the award is organised with support from Fnac. The Historical Book Award is given to the best documented project about photography or a photographer, which can be thematic or monographic, published between 1 June 2012 and 31 May 2013. The winner receives 8,000 euros. The Book Awards are announced during the Rencontres d’Arles opening week by the nominators of the 2013 Discovery Award, accompanied by the Rencontres d’Arles’ president, Jean-Noël Jeanneney, and one Fnac representative. After the festival, the books submitted for the awards are given to an international cultural institution dedicated to photography for inclusion in their archives. Two copies of each book are received: one is destined for the École Nationale de la Photographie d’Arles library, and the other is sent abroad to a cultural institution dedicated to photography to be added to their archive. The institution changes each year. This year, the books will become part of the Valparaiso International Photography Festival’s library. In 2010, the books submitted in 2009 enriched the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre’s library in Beijing, within the framework of a three-year partnership bringing together the Rencontres d’Arles and the Caochangdi Photospring Festival - Arles in Beijing. In 2011, the participating books were sent to the CAMM (Conservatoire des Arts et des Métiers Multimédia Balla Fasseké Kouyaté, Mali) library, in the context of the 8th edition of the Rencontres de Bamako, African Photography Biennale for, which took place in the autumn of 2011. In 2012, the books became part of the library at the Market Photo Workshop, a school and gallery founded in 1989 in Johannesburg by David Goldblatt.
