Matthew Shaul set up Departure Lounge in Luton, UK with the aim of innovative photographic art new places in 2010. He was director of the contemporary art exhibitions programme at the University of Hertfordshire Galleries between 1996-2017, and before this worked as a researcher and curator for BBC TV.
His early career included stints at three New York City art museums where he lived for three years in the early 1990s. He returned to the UK in 1993 and was one of the first graduates of the Royal College of Art’s curatorial programme in 1995. He has an ongoing interest in photographic art (particularly approaches to portraiture and landscape), and the art, design and culture of modern and contemporary Germany.
He is now working as an independent curator while studying for a PhD (colour photography and the ‘invention’ of German identity) at Queen Mary University of London.
