Joanna Hurley has spent her career in book publishing. An award-winning publicist and packager, she was originally trained as an editor at Harper & Row, was marketing director at The University of New Mexico Press, publicity director at Vintage Books, and a co-founder of Radius Books. She has been independently developing and producing award-winning photography books with a variety of publishers since 2007, including Damiani Editore, George F. Thompson Publishing, University of California Press, The Briscoe Center for American History, and Chronicle Books.
Recent projects include Joan Myers, The Devil’s Highway: On the Road in the American West (2022), Steve Fitch’s bestselling Vanishing Vernacular: Western Landscapes (2018), Krista Elrick’s A Country No More: Rediscovering the Landscapes of John James Audubon (2020), which was selected as photo-eye’s best book of 2020, and to which she is a contributing writer; and William and Anne Frej’s Travels Across the Roof of the World: A Himalayan Memoir (2022), which was hailed as “engrossing,” “gorgeous,” and “unforgettable” by USA Today, and excerpted in the prestigious online magazine, blind: Photography at First Sight.
Her project with photographer Jack Parsons, In the Buddha’s Light: The Temples of Luang Prabang, with her essay and his photographs, was published by the International Folk Art Market in 2020.
She is chair emerita of CENTER, an internationally-renowned photography organization that has supported gifted and committed photographers through programs, seminars, and awards since 1994, and an advisor to the Santa Fe International Literary Festival.
