Jean Pigozzi

Born in 1952 in France.

Jean Pigozzi is an Italian businessman who grew up in France, graduated from Harvard in 1974, and now lives in Switzerland and other places, including the jungle of Panama. Pigozzi started taking photographs as a seven-year-old. His first exhibition was held at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1974, followed by two solo shows in New York: at the Light Gallery (1980) and the Gagosian Gallery (1990). In 2008, the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin staged the group show Pigozzi and the Paparazzi. In 1989, with French curator André Magnin, he started what has become the world’s most important collection of contemporary African art, the CAAC, which is shown regularly worldwide. In 1996, Jean Pigozzi began buying land in Panama, and set up the Liquid Jungle Lab, dedicated to protecting the environment. In 2008, Jean started a high-end fashion company, Limoland, geared to ROMs (rich old men). He still takes photographs daily. His latest book, Catalogue déraisonné, will be published by Steidl/Dangin in the fall. His previous books include Pigozzi’s Journal of the Seventies (Doubleday, 1980) and A Short Visit to Planet Earth (Aperture, 1990).
