James Casebere

Born 1953, in Lansing, Michigan. Lives and works in Brooklyn, New York

After studying in Michigan, James Casebere attended the Whitney Independent Study Programme in New York, and then moved to Los Angeles, where he rubbed shoulders with John Baldessari, Mike Kelly and Tony Oursler, and got a Masters in Fine Arts from Cal Arts in 1979. His first exhibitions were held at Franklin Furnace and Sonnebend Gallery. His work was associated with the ‘Pictures Generation’, artists who emerged in the 1980s, who included Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince, among others. He then focused his attention on different cultural institutions during the Enlightenment and their representation as architectural types. He followed this with numerous works about the slave trade between Africa and America. After 9/11, he turned his attention to Spain and the Eastern Mediterranean and was included in the 1985 and 2010 Whitney Biennial and has been the recipient of numerous fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NY Foundation for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. His work has been collected by museums worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the MET in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, LA Museum of Contemporary Art and the V&A Museum in London, among many others.
