Hasan & Husain Essop
Born in 1985 in Cape Town. Live and work in South Africa.
They have been collaborating since their graduation from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 2006 and went on to complete their post graduate diploma in art in 2009 at U.C.T. Exhibitions include The Loaded Lens (2007) and Power Play (2008) at Goodman Gallery Cape Town, Peekaboo: Current South Africa (2010) at the Helsinki Museum, Figures & Fictions: Contemporary South African Photography (2011) at the V&A Museum, and the solo exhibitions Halaal Art (2010) at Goodman Gallery Johannesburg and Indelible Marks (2011), Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde, Dubai. They participated in the prestigious Havana Bienale under the theme ‘Integration and Resistance in the Global Age’ in 2009 and the Dakar Biennial in 2010. In 2011 the Essops completed a three-month residency at the Thami Mnyele Foundation. Their work is represented in various private and public collections, including the South African National Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery, and the Spier Collection.
