Born 1916, Monterrey, Mexico. Died 1995, Mexico City, Mexico.
Known for his landscapes and architectural views, Armando Salas Portugal predominantly photographed the architecture of celebrated Mexican architect Luis Barragan. In 1968, he produced the series Photography of thoughts. For this work, subjects were connected to a device that transcribed the “movement” of their thoughts onto photographic paper while listening to classical music. The work of Armando Salas Portugal thus finds itself somewhere between abstraction and document, scientific investigation and aesthetic endeavor.
