Germaine Dulac

Born 1882, Amiens, France. Died 1942, Paris, France.
After working as a journalist for the feminist magazines La Fronde and La Française, Germaine Dulac became a director in 1915. Her first films (as in 1923’s La Souriante Madame Beudet) exhibit the movement of her feminist thought to the cinematic medium. Her social discourse and experimental approach to framing make her an important figure of avant-garde cinema. With the poor critical reception of her film La Coquille et le Clergyman (1927), she turned to filming newsreels.
