Born 1894, Nantes, France. Died 1954, Saint-Hélier, Jersey, United Kingdom.
Claude Cahun was a poet, essayist, translator, and literary critic, but it was in photography that she displayed her diverse personae. A major figure of feminist and gay advocacy, she described herself as “gender neutral.’’ In 1930, she published Aveux non avenus, autobiographical “poem-essays’’ accompanied by ten photomontages. She was close to the surrealists, and participated in the Exposition surréaliste d'objets in 1936.
