Hans Bellmer

Born 1902, Katowice, Poland. Died 1975, Paris, France.
Trained as an industrial designer, Hans Bellmer was aligned with the surrealists in the 1930s, publishing photographs of a disarticulated doll he crafted in the review Minotaure. In 1938, he moved to Paris, and along with Max Ernst, was held at the Camp des Milles internment camp during World War II. His work has strong ties to literature; he produced illustrations for Georges Bataille’s Histoire de l'œil (1945), and Madame Edwarda (1965).
