José Alejandro Restrepo

Born 1959, Paris, France. Lives and works in Bogotá, Colombia
José Alejandro Restrepo originally studied medicine and in 1981 shifted to study art at the Universidad Nacional de Bogotá and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, París. Considered a pioneer of video-art in Colombia, his practice spans single-channel, video performance, and video installation. He exhibits regularly in Europe, Latin America, and the United States. His work has been the subject of various solo exhibitions at venues such as the Museo de Antioquia, Medellín; Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango, Bogotá; Museo de Arte Moderno, Bogotá; Anaconda, Aphone, Geneva, Switzerland; and the Museo de la Universidad Nacional, Bogotá. Selected group shows include: Arte y Violencia en Colombia, Museo de Arte Moderno, Bogotá; The Sense of Place, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Tempo, Museum of Modern Art Queens, New York; Botánica Política, Fundación la Caixa, Barcelona and Cantos/Cuentos Colombianos: Contemporary Colombian Art, Daros-Latinamerica, Zurich; 52nd Venice Biennale; Havana Biennial; 23rd São Paulo Biennial, and the Bienal de Cuenca, Ecuador.
