Saul Leiter

Born 1923 in Pittsburgh, United States.
Died 2013 in New York, United States.

Saul Leiter began painting and photographing as a teenager. His first painting exhibits garnered a certain success. When he moved to New York in 1946, he focused on photography to earn a living, while continuing to paint. In 1957, he started working for magazines such as Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar. As his commercial career blossomed, Leiter continued to shoot street photographs, mostly in his downtown Manhattan neighborhood. In 2006, Leiter’s first book, Early Color, revealed the artist as a master of color photography whose oeuvre began in the late 1940s. Leiter died in 2013, at the height of his popularity. In the years since, his work has inspired many museum exhibitions and book releases worldwide.
