Christien MEINDERSTMA

Born in 1980 in Netherlands.

Lives and works in Rotterdam.

Her childhood was spent in the city of Culemborg and in a small village called Schoonrewoerd in the centre of the Netherlands. After high school she went to the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In 2002 she was awarded the "Second Best Award" for a project that gave second hand clothing a new life. In her 3rd year she completed a project in northern Brazil. Working with local artisans and fellow students, they produced an accessories collection from leather cowboy suits and saddles. In 2003 she graduated with two projects. The first was Checked Baggage, a book showing everything confiscated from Schiphol Airport in one week.

The second, ECHTschaap (a real sheep) was a collection of knitwear, made from only one sheep at a time. One of the sheep was a prizewinner for its beauty, so its sweater proudly shows the silver medal and roset it was awarded. ECHTschaap won the "Milkyway Prize" for most endearing project of that years graduating class. In the autumn of 2005, Christien will launch her first collection based on this concept, this time created from the wool of a unique Welsh flock of sheep. Christien lives and works in Rotterdam as a freelance designer for clients and herself.

Christien Meinderstma presented her work at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2005: Checked Baggage at the Atelier de Mécanique.
