Claudine DOURY

Born in 1959 in Blois (France).
Lives and works in Paris.


After graduating in journalism, Claudine Doury first worked as a picture editor for Gamma, then for Contact in New York and French daily Libération.

In 1989 she decided to become a photographer and for three months covered the French nurses’ strike for Libération.

A member of VU’ since 1991, she contributes to many magazines.

Winning the Villa Médicis Hors les Murs award (1996) and a Fiacre bursary (1997) enabled her to do a project on minorities in Siberia, which gave rise to a show at La Villette, Paris, in 1999 and to Peuples de Sibérie, published by Éditions du Seuil. For this work she received the Leica Oskar Barnack Award in 1999, then the World Press Award (category: nature and environment stories).

In 2004 her book on the Russian pioneers’ camp, Artek, un été en Crimée (Artek, a summer in Crimea) was published by Éditions de la Martinière, and she received the Niepce award for her new project Au-delà des steppes (Beyond the steppes).


Claudine Doury also worked on a series called Sasha (2007-2010).

She presented her work at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2006, with her series Beyond the Steppes at the Atelier de Mécanique.
