Grégoire KORGANOW

Born in 1967 in France. Lives in Paris.
In 1992 Grégoire Korganow began working as a reporter, monitoring the changes in the former Soviet bloc: Russia, ex-Yugoslavia, Albania and elsewhere. 1993 saw the beginning of an association with Paris daily Libération that would last almost ten years. His images mix journalism, portraits and landscapes. Politically committed, he covered the housing and sans papiers issues in Paris, and the struggles of the Mapuche Indians in Chile and the people of Oaxaca in Mexico. This confirmed traveller has crisscrossed Patagonia in the footsteps of writers Luis Sepulveda and Francisco Coloane, wandered the streets of Tokyo in search of unlikely encounters, and more recently begun a voyage along the Arctic Circle. Drawn to the "out of frame", he has gone behind the scenes for France's presidential elections, and covered fashion parades and the shooting of porn movies. In 2005 director Stéphane Mercurio asked him to work on her documentary à côté, on prisoners' families in Rennes. For over a year he photographed the chaotic lives of men and women ill-treated and often ignored by prison administrators. The film is being released in autumn 2008. For four years now he has been photographing backstage for Marie Claire at haute couture parades; this led to an invitation from Christian Lacroix to photograph the Hôtel du Petit Moulin in Paris, which Lacroix had just redecorated. Grégoire Korganow is a co-founder of the reportage magazine De l’air and his images often appear in the press. He is represented by the Rapho Agency, Paris. Grégoire Korganow presented his work at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2008: A côté and Backstage at the Atelier de Mécanique.
