Release of Hubert Védrine
president of the Rencontres d'Arles

Following the cancellation of the press conference scheduled for March 13 at the Ministry of Culture, attached please find the speech by Hubert Védrine, president of the Rencontres d'Arles, launching the 51st Rencontres d'Arles, and his press release on the recruitment of a new director.

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
HUBERT VÉDRINE
PRESIDENT OF THE RENCONTRES D’ARLES

After brilliantly celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019, the Rencontres d'Arles is back this year in better shape than ever. The 51st edition will once again thrill the capital of photography, and us with it.

The artists on this year’s program have explored the world around them, from their next-door neighbors to the other side of the planet.

The influence of the Rencontres d'Arles is first and foremost local, with a presence in the city's cultural landscape year round. It is also regional, with a network of increasingly numerous institutions that showcase photography during the summer by taking part in the Grand Arles Express, which has become a must for art lovers. The number of venues is growing, from Nîmes to Marseille, Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Further north, the festival can be found at the Institute for Photography in Lille, which opened in autumn 2019 with an outstanding program featuring some of the festival’s favorite artists and a flagship show from the 2019 Rencontres. Leaping across borders, the Rencontres d'Arles and photography have been internationally expanding for five years now with a Chinese branch, the Jimei x Arles International Photography Festival, and many Rencontres-produced shows on tour in Montreal, Barcelona, Berlin, etc.

This year will also be an opportunity to take stock of our achievements and the prospects that lie ahead. Sam Stourdzé, our director since 2014, has been appointed head of the French Academy in Rome-Villa Medici. For the past six years, he has breathed new life into the festival by fostering dialogue between photography and contemporary art, music, cinema and literature. This has led to a reassessment of photography and maintained the festival's vibrancy and relevance. Moreover, more and more people (1.4 million in 2019!) come to the exhibitions during the summer. Mr. Stourdzé will run this year’s Rencontres d'Arles in the same spirit until September. We are of course delighted for him and wish him success in his new role. May his experience as head of the festival open up the doors of the Villa Medici, a prestigious institution, and put the Rencontres d'Arles on the international cultural map. We are sad to see him go but also excited about the opening of a new chapter. We are going to launch a recruitment process very soon and, in accordance with the statutes, after consultation with the Board of Directors I will appoint the new director. The Rencontres d'Arles, and photography, always have something fresh to offer. A new adventure will soon begin, much to our enjoyment.

The Rencontres d'Arles has launched a selection and recruitment process for its new director.

The call will be as open as possible.

The recruitment process will take place in two stages: a pre-selection and an interview.

As stipulated in the association’s statutes, as president of the Rencontres d'Arles I will appoint the new director after consultation with the members of the Board of Directors.

The announcement is attached and on the Rencontres website. Candidates will have one month to apply and propose an artistic project.

The aim is to have an appointment by the summer so that the new director can take up his or her duties as soon as possible.
