DON McCULLIN

Africa: In Light and Shadow

Exhibition closed from 17 September 2006
“A great photographer: curious, committed, concerned, a war photographer I couldn’t respect more. He has his own aesthetic. He seems to me an exceptional, very important photographer. I would like to personally thank him for showing his photographs together with Gilles Caron’s, thanks to our friend, Robert Pledge.”
Raymond Depardon

II made a number of journeys in 2003 and 2004 to photograph the tribes along the Omo River basin in a corner of Ethiopia that borders with Southern Sudan. The Omo rises in the Central Highlands and flows down into Lake Turkana. The course of the river takes one from Coptic Christian Ethiopia down to the rim of black Africa. As you move south the features of those you meet become rounder, darker and tenser. You cross a boundary into another world where people are festooned with weapons and you can sense the surrounding danger.”
Excerpt from Don McCullin en Afrique, éditions de La Martinière, 2005. Curators: Robert Pledge and Raymond Depardon.

Exhibition coproduced by Contact Press Images and The Rencontres d’Arles. The silver prints are by the photographer.
