Penelope Umbrico
Born in Philadelphia. Lives and works in New York.
Penelope Umbrico studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and received her M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she is currently core faculty in the MFA Photography Video and Related Media program. She has exhibited widely and has participated in numerous group exhibitions including those at MoMA PS1; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Pingyao International Photography Festival, China; Kunstverein Ludwigshafen, Germany; Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane Australia; Carpenter Center at Harvard University... Her work is in permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the ICP in New York, among others. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Anonymous Was A Woman Award; New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship and an Aaron Siskind Individual Photographer’s Fellowship. Her first monograph, Penelope Umbrico (photographs), was published in 2011 by Aperture.
