Born 1910, Cologne, Germany. Died 1985, Dieudonné, France.
Ubac’s photographic work has intimate ties to surrealism. Leaving Belgium for Paris in 1930, he studied literature, and frequented studios in Montparnasse, before carrying out sophisticated photography experiments influenced by Man Ray (burns, solarizations, etc.), and published in the Minotaure. After World War II, he turned exclusively to painting and sculpture.
