Otto Muehl was a soldier in the German army from 1943-1945, an experience which played a critical role in his work. He took part in the first collective performance of the Viennese Actionists, during which the artists shut themselves up in their basement studio. By putting all types of organic waste on show, his performances sought to evoke extreme sensations, from disgust to excitation, in the public.
