Born 1898, Lessines, Belgium. Died 1967, Brussels, Belgium.
The painter and illustrator René Magritte was among the founders of the Belgian surrealists in 1926. He moved to France the following year, publishing “Les Mots et les Images” in La Révolution surréaliste in 1929. His paintings, filled with humor, are marked by their philosophical import. In 1954, he exhibited in New York, and a first retrospective of his work was held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, in 1954.
