Since 1999, Charles Fréger has produced an impressive body of work in photography, frequently centered on human beings and their social “skins.” In uniform, with striped faces or wearing moss, beings appear in their becoming-human, becoming-animal, becoming-plant. Costume plays its role, embodying the link to community, nature’s cycles and beliefs. Carried out over several years, the works are destined for publication. Essays by authors and notes by researchers frame the photography, which leaves as much room for fiction as it documents ways in which beings, in the world, invent their way of relating to their own and to the living world.
