Bernard Plossu spent his childhood in Paris. He started taking photos during a journey to the Sahara with his father in 1958. A constant traveller, he then produced numerous reportages throughout the world: Mexico, United States, India, Niger and the Aeolian Islands, in particular, moving back and forth between colour and black and white. In the 1970s, he was part of Contrejour with his friend Claude Nori, and participated in the creation of Cahiers de la photographie in 1981. Several retrospectives have been devoted to his work: at the Centre Pompidou, Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego (1989), Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (Valencia, Spain, 1997), Musée d’Art Moderne in Strasbourg (2006) and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico (2015).
