Uraguchi Kusukazu was a Japanese photographer. Born in 1922 in Shima (Mie administrative centre), he ran the family pearl business before devoting himself to photography, which he practised assiduously as an amateur for over thirty years. His photographs – particularly the work he devoted to his favourite subject, the ama, freediving fisherwomen – won him awards and publications in the leading magazines of the day, and led him to frequent various photo-clubs, particularly the Nikakai in Tokyo. He died of pneumonia in 1988, leaving behind two books and a considerable archive, mostly devoted to his native region.
